The most recent Destination Weddings Study from TheKnot.com shows that Mexico was the destination of choice for nearly one in four couples, second only to the Caribbean, among those who opted for a wedding outside the continental United States. And, generally speaking, most destination weddings couples choose to honeymoon where they have their nuptials.

While hotels may not necessarily have designated “honeymoon suites,” there is no shortage of grand and elegant accommodations, especially in the Cancun/Cozumel/Riviera Maya region. And with TheKnot.com’s annual Real Weddings Study noting a trend of growing budgets for the past two years, you shouldn’t hesitate to upgrade your newlyweds to the finest digs available, whether or not they are part of a given honeymoon package. Upsell to your anniversary and “second honeymoon” clients as well; odds are they are more well-to-do than when they started their married life together and may really be looking to splurge.

Following is only a small sampling of the great variety of options available, beginning with the trendy, eco-friendly Mayakoba resort area.

At Rosewood Mayakoba, the Deluxe Overwater Lagoon Suite has a lounge terrace with a relaxing plunge pool, an outdoor garden shower, and spectacular views of the mangroves. The resort touts this spacious unit as being its best choice for honeymooners and couples. Bonus: The suite comes with butler service and tequila welcome amenity.

A Beach Area Casita Suite on the lagoon at Fairmont Mayakoba offers more than enough room for any couple. Room #806, for example, spans 1,113 square feet and includes a wrap-around balcony that looks out on to the lagoons and canals. This suite also has its own rooftop solarium with an infinity pool overlooking the entire resort and the Caribbean. Consider a private dinner or a couple’s massage up there.

A heated swimming pool, outdoor jetpool, private sundeck leading from the pool, and personal terrace leading from the bedroom are just the start of what makes a Sanctuary Pool Villa at Banyan Tree Mayakoba a good match for lovers. This sanctuary is made complete with the addition of an outdoor sunken bathtub and peaceful private garden.

Occidental Grand Xcaret Resort is connected to the eco-archeological Xcaret Park. Its Royal Club Junior Suite rooms include all of the resort’s all-inclusive features plus a living room and separate bedroom with private balcony, and hydro-massage bathtubs. The king beds are draped in Egyptian cotton linens and there are blackout curtains to provide a night of comfort and tranquility. Butler service is available. For something a bit cozier, couples can opt for one of the 44 950-square-foot Ocean Suites.

In CancunLe Blanc Spa Resort targets newlyweds with its Royale Honeymoon Suites, which are designed to provide an intimate atmosphere. A  translucent curtain screens the king bed from the seating area. Outside, a double whirlpool faces the Caribbean Sea. Bonus: This resort is for adults only.

The thatched-roof Mayan Suites at Grand Palladium Colonial Resort & Spa were designed especially for honeymooners and other couples. They have separate entrances for greater privacy, and a large balcony or terrace with hammock and outdoor Mayan shower. The full bathroom has a window and hydro massage bathtub.

Active couples, especially those who can’t get enough of diving and other watersports, may be drawn to Cozumel. The Junior Suite Frente Al Mar atIberostar Cozumel may best suit their desires. It’s on the seaside of the resort, so they get both a sea view and, from their balcony, a garden view as well—whichever strikes their romantic fancy.

For those seeking a larger-than-life experience, suggest the Honeymoon Villa at Iberostar Grand Hotel Paraiso in Riviera Maya. The welcome check-in comes complete with champagne and a refreshing moist towel, and all Villa and Oceanfront guests enjoy exclusive butler and concierge services.

The crème de la crème at Secrets Maroma Beach in Riviera Cancun is the Presidential Suite, which measures an expansive 1,873 square feet. It has pool and tropical views, four-poster king bed, private furnished terrace with direct swim-out access to one of the 12 pools that flows to each private patio, full bathroom with Jacuzzi for two and furnished balcony with a Jacuzzi for four and telescope.
